Let robots clean for you

You can establish good relations with our future overlords by retaining one or two cleaning robots. They need recharging and occasional cleaning (oh, the irony), but they can save you a lot of time vacuuming or mopping. They can save you money, too, eventually. Every once in a while I hire a couple of cleaning people. Depending on what your help charges, floor-cleaning robots will pay for themselves in a few months.

Lots of people swear by their Roomba, like my brother. I like the manufacturer's name, iRobot, an homage to Isaac Asimov (I assume). I almost bought a Roomba Vacuum Cleaning Robot for Pets on the strength of the name, thinking that my cats would use it.

However, I dislike misspelled Spanish words, so I chose a Neato Pet and Allergy Vacuum instead of the Roomba, although "Neato" is also pretty lame. The instantly renamed Hilda does a great job, though, and the cats don't seem too bothered when she bustles around, unless she runs over somebody's tail.

One of my least favorite chores is mopping. I am thrilled to announce that Mint Plus Automatic Floor Cleaner loves mopping, and can sweep—and Swiff—too. Strangely enough, Minty is much, much quieter than Hilda, but he spooks the cats. Maybe they think he's sneaking up on them.

I put a little Dr Bronner's lavender castile magic soap into Minty's reservoir instead of just filling it with water. The house smells fabulous. The wood floors gleam. I am happy.
