First of all, don't freak out too much about bugs outside. Most of the insects and spiders in and around your home contribute something beneficial to the environment. The exceptions are fleas and mosquitoes. Oh, and fire ants.
Inside, though: that's another story. I don't want to share my space with fleas, bed bugs, or roaches.
One miracle substance you may not have heard about is food-grade diatomaceous earth. When insects scuttle through it, it gets into their systems and dries them up. You can sprinkle DE in your pets' bedding and around their food dishes, and if they accidentally eat some of it, it won't harm them. (It is dusty, though, so it's best not to inhale it or you'll cough up a storm.) It can be sprinkled into the litter box to help deodorize it, too.
You can sprinkle DE around baseboards, kitchen cabinets, or your bed. Or puff it with the Little City Dogs KILLER DUST (emphasis not mine) squeeze bottle. It needs to be a light sprinkling that bugs can skip through, not hike over.
Remember the DE needs to be food grade, not the kind that goes in your swimming pool filter. That stuff will cut you up. You can also use it to stabilize dynamite. Just thought you'd like to know that.
Speaking of litter, I have tried every type and brand. But after discovering Dr Elsey's Precious Cat Ultra Premium Litter, my quest for the best cat litter came to a successful end. Try to overlook the silly name. If your cats are having Litter Box Issues, Dr Elsey's Precious Cat Cat Attract Litter will help your cats return to normal and you return to sanity.
Speaking of sanity, if your kitty is stressed out, Comfort Zone with FeliWay is a magic potion. The price may seem high, but one bottle of this soothing scent lasts a long time. A couple of squirts on any furniture that your cat likes to claw will eventually stop that unwanted behavior. And a couple of squirts on a doorway, bedding, furniture, or pet carrier will calm cats down.
Litter box odors bugging you? They bug your cat even more, since her sense of smell is probably better than yours. I finally have the solution: spray some of this fantastic Clean + Green Litter Box Odor Removal in it. I have tried everything, and I mean everything, and this stuff really works. I also use their Carpet and Upholstery Odor Remover, since, unlike your well-trained dogs and cats, mine frequently yak on the carpet. There's also a Clean + Green Wood and Tile stain and odor remover for pets or kids who can't make it to the carpet in time.
Mrs Meyers makes lovely smelling room fresheners. How about this one in lavender? They also come in basil (bizarrely), my favorite geranium, and lemon verbena.
Finally, there is this miraculous product: Poo-Pourri. Be proactive. The other members of your household will thank you.
